If you are working on a site plan in Revit, you know how important it is to add property lines to your project. Property lines define the boundaries of your site and can help you calculate area, determine setbacks, and comply with zoning regulations.
But how do you add property lines in Revit? You might be tempted to use detail lines, which are easy to draw and edit, but you would be making a big mistake.
Detail lines are not appropriate for property lines and can cause many problems and errors. They are 2D elements that only appear in one view, and they can be inconsistent when you copy and paste them to other views.
In this blog post, you will learn how to add property lines in Revit using both the distances and bearings method and the sketch method.
Method 1 – Sketch property line
If you do not have the exact coordinates of your property lines, you can create them by sketching.
Steps
- Go to the Massing & Site tab > Model Site panel > Click Property Line.
- Click Create by sketching.
- Draw lines on the boundary of your property.
- Click Finish Edit Mode.

Note that property lines do not have to form a closed loop, but they cannot intersect with each other.
If you leave a gap in your sketch, Revit will warn you that the property lines do not form a closed loop. This means that you will not be able to calculate the area of your site based on the property lines.
After you finish sketching, you will see the property lines in your model. They will also appear in all other floor plan views.

Method 2 – Distances and bearings
If you have the exact coordinates of your property lines, such as from a site survey drawing, you can create them by entering distances and bearings.
How to use bearings to create property lines:
- Go to the Massing & Site tab > Model Site panel > Click Property Line.
- Click Create by entering distances and bearings.
- Enter the distances and bearings of the segments of your property line.
- Set the property line in place.

To control the visibility of property lines in different plan views, use the hide and unhide in Revit tools.
You can also change the line settings for all property lines at once, such as the type, color, or weight:
- Go to the Manage tab > Settings panel > click Object Styles.
- Open the Model Objects tab.
- Find Property Lines under the Site Category.
- Change the projection, color, and pattern.
- Click OK.

If you cannot tag Revit property lines, reset the temporary hide/isolate mode and then tag the property line segment.
